Driver Rescued After Car Plunges Over Bridge, Catches Fire in Montgomery County

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (7News) — Emergency crews rescued a driver after a vehicle went over a bridge, down an embankment, and caught fire following a multi-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon in Burtonsville.

The collision happened near the intersection of Briggs Chaney Road and Columbia Pike and involved three vehicles, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS). One of the vehicles veered off the roadway, plunged over the bridge, and ignited after coming to rest below.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames and extricated one person from the burning vehicle. MCFRS evaluated multiple patients at the scene, including two individuals classified as Priority 2 trauma patients. One person was able to get out of a vehicle without help, while another required assistance from responders.

Despite the dramatic scene, officials said the driver whose vehicle went over the bridge did not require emergency medical treatment. The crash caused significant traffic disruptions in the area as crews worked the scene.
