Two Killed After Honda Collides With Big Rig on Highway 99 in Madera County, CHP Reports

Two people died Thursday night after their Honda Civic collided with a big rig on southbound Highway 99 in Madera County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 6:30 p.m. just south of Avenue 11. CHP investigators say the Honda Civic made a sudden maneuver near the semi-truck, causing the driver to lose control.

“For an unknown reason, the driver of the Honda Civic lost control and moved into the path of the big rig,” Sergeant Sal Contreras said. “The big rig driver hit the brakes but couldn’t avoid the crash and struck the side of the Honda.”

The Honda’s driver and passenger — a man and woman, both about 30 years old — were pronounced dead at the scene.

CHP says neither drugs nor alcohol appear to have contributed to the crash.

Traffic on Highway 99 remained backed up for several hours as officers investigated. The collision remains under investigation.
