Illinois Braces for Weekend Snow: 1–3 Inches and Sub-Zero Wind Chills Ahead

The National Weather Service Chicago is warning residents to brace themselves for increasing snow and severe cold as an early winter pattern strengthens in northern Illinois through the weekend. Forecasters predict 1 to 3 inches of snow beginning Thursday evening, followed by sub-zero temperatures and wind chills by Saturday morning.

According to Wednesday’s forecast update, highs will drop into the 20s and low 30s on Thursday, with snow showers expected overnight and early Friday, mainly north of I-80. Temperatures are anticipated to drop into the single digits Friday night and Saturday, with wind chills ranging from -10° to -25°.

“Bitterly cold air will settle in behind the snow system, marking one of the coldest stretches of the season so far,” according to forecasters. “Fluffy snow will add to travel hazards as visibility and traction decrease.”

The weather service warns that icy roads and poor visibility might disrupt Friday morning and Saturday travel, particularly along the Rockford-Waukegan corridor. Residents are encouraged to dress in layers, limit their outdoor exposure, and keep an eye on their vulnerable neighbors.
