A Central Florida man was taken into custody for punching a victim in the face and stabbing him many times at a gas station.

Deputies from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office arrested the man on charges of attempted murder in the first degree, battery on a law enforcement officer, and resisting an officer with violence.

According to law authorities, Dale Jabonero, 51, was smoking a cigarette at the Rally Gas Station on 3400 Ulmerton Road in Clearwater when 44-year-old Enrique Lopez asked for one. Jabonero and Lopez talked before Lopez left to speak to another patron at the gas station.

Lopez reappeared shortly after and punched Jabonero in the face without provocation. Jabonero attempted to flee, but Lopez pursued him and punched him repeatedly until he collapsed. Lopez repeatedly stabbed Jabonero as he lay on the ground.

When deputies arrived, Lopez retreated inside the gas station, where he was eventually taken into custody.

Jabonero was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Lopez was detained and charged with attempted first-degree murder, battery on a law enforcement officer, and violently resisting an officer. He was taken to the hospital, where he was medically cleared and then sent to the Pinellas County jail.

The inquiry is ongoing, according to local law enforcement.
