70-Year-Old Cyclist Seriously Injured After Collision With Pickup Truck in San Diego

A 70-year-old cyclist suffered serious injuries after colliding with a pickup truck Friday afternoon in San Diego’s Midway neighborhood.

The crash happened in the 4100 block of Sports Arena Boulevard, where the bicyclist was reportedly struck by a northbound pickup truck while attempting to make a left turn.

According to a San Diego Police Department press release, the man was riding northbound in a marked bicycle lane when he turned left into the path of a northbound 1992 Mazda pickup, driven by a 29-year-old man.

The impact threw the cyclist from his bike, and he was rushed to a local hospital with multiple injuries, including fractured ribs, a tibia fracture, a fibula fracture, and a collapsed lung. Police confirmed the injuries are serious but not life-threatening.

Officer J. Perales, the watch commander at the scene, stated that alcohol was not a factor in the crash. The San Diego Police Department Traffic Division is leading the investigation.
