Five people were injured and two suspects were taken into custody after shots were fired near Howard University’s campus in Northwest D.C. on Friday night, authorities confirmed.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department and D.C. Fire and EMS, the shooting happened around 8:23 p.m. in the 600 block of Howard Place NW, close to the University’s Yard and the School of Architecture.
Officials said the gunfire erupted shortly after Homecoming YardFest ended and just as nearby roads reopened to traffic.
Police identified the victims as three men, one woman, and a teenage boy, none of whom are Howard University students. All five were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith stated that two suspects were detained, and officers recovered three firearms at the scene.
Authorities emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the community, but police will increase patrols around the campus throughout the weekend’s homecoming celebrations.
In a violent night across the city, nine people were shot in less than four hours, police said.
