3-Year-Old Killed, 2-Year-Old Critically Injured in Head-On Collision in Macomb County, Authorities Say

Authorities are investigating after a 3-year-old died and a 2-year-old suffered critical injuries in a head-on collision Thursday evening in Macomb County, Michigan.

Michigan State Police said Macomb County Dispatch received calls around 5:20 p.m. about the crash on M-53 and Ebeling Road in Bruce Township. Troopers responding to the scene found two vehicles. One carried a male driver with his 3-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son, while an 18-year-old woman from Davison drove the second vehicle.

Preliminary investigation revealed the man was driving a 2011 Chevy Impala southbound on M-53 with his two children when he crossed into the northbound lanes and collided with the 18-year-old, who was driving a 2023 Chevy Impala.

MSP said the 3-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene. The 2-year-old boy, along with the male driver and the 18-year-old woman, were transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police noted the 18-year-old was driving behind her boyfriend, who managed to swerve and avoid being struck.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. MSP said there is no evidence the male driver used brakes before the collision.

MSP First Lieutenant Mike Shaw said neither child was properly restrained at the time, and the vehicle had only one car seat.

“What we don’t know is why the at-fault driver crossed over into the oncoming lanes. A blood draw was taken as part of the investigation,” Shaw said. “It is particularly heartbreaking when a preventable crash occurs on a holiday. It is even worse when a child loses their life. Please make sure to wear your seatbelt and that your children are properly restrained every trip.”
