BANGOR, Maine – A Pennsylvania mother is facing manslaughter charges after her 3-year-old daughter and the family’s small dog were found dead inside a parked car over the weekend.
Police said Kelly Brown, 40, left her daughter, Fiona, and the dog in her vehicle around 2 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot of Milford Freshies. Surveillance footage showed Brown briefly returning to the car around 6 a.m. before leaving again.
Authorities discovered the bodies about 14 hours later, when Brown returned to the scene and was taken into custody. The deputy chief medical examiner said heat was likely the cause of death.
Brown told officers she had been camping along the Penobscot River and cleaning the parking lot with gloves and trash bags provided by management. She claimed she fell into the river and swam across before seeing police, but investigators said surveillance video contradicted her story.
Family members reported Brown missing earlier, telling police she had stopped taking her anxiety medication, was hallucinating, and possibly using marijuana. They also said she had been acting erratically for weeks and claimed to see spirits.
A judge set Brown’s bail at $50,000 and barred her from contact with minors while the case is active. She remains in custody at Penobscot County Jail.
