A 21-year-old was detained Wednesday morning in Orange County under the new “Super Speeder” legislation for reportedly driving 134 mph in a 60 mph zone.
What led to the arrest?
Around 11:25 a.m. on Wednesday, an Orange County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) deputy reported that they were driving eastbound on State Road 408, near Semoran Boulevard, when they noticed a white vehicle in their rearview mirror that was rapidly changing lanes and increasing speed.
After the car passed the deputy, he followed it, reaching speeds of up to 134 mph in a 60-mph zone.
The deputy conducted a traffic stop between Goldenrod Road and Chickasaw Trail, identifying the driver as 21-year-old Ethan Alter.
Alter, of Winter Springs, was arrested for exceeding the speed limit in violation of the Super Speeder legislation.
What is the Super Speeder law?
Drivers found speeding 50 mph or more over the stated speed limit—or exceeding 100 mph—can now face criminal charges in addition to a traffic citation under Florida’s new Super Speeder statute, which went into effect on July 1.
The law allows for penalties such as up to 30 days in jail and a $500 fine for a first offense, with heavier punishments for repeat offenders. A second infraction within a year can result in up to 90 days in jail, a $1,000 fine, and the suspension of one’s driver license.
