A 20-year-old man was suspected of striking his landlord with an axe last week, according to police.
On Nov. 26, officers from the Miami Police Department responded to a home near the 800 block of Northwest 24th Court after receiving allegations of an aggravated battery with an axe.
The suspect has been identified by police as Jose Lazaro Trinidad Jr.
Authorities claimed the landlord, who had just come home from a five-day hospital visit, attempted to enter his locked bedroom and found Trinidad inside.
According to the complaint, a dispute erupted, and the landlord said Trinidad was armed with a tiny chrome-colored hatchet.
Police said that as the landlord moved outside, facing away from Trinidad, the suspect smacked him on the back of the head, causing a minor laceration.
According to the report, the sufferer declined medical transport and said that he intended to treat the wound himself.
Trinidad stayed at the scene and contacted 911. Police detained him and recovered the axe, according to reports.
According to the report, other tenants informed police that Trinidad was residing in a backyard shed rather than the main home and had no authority to access the landlord’s room.
Trinidad told police he acted in self-defense after the landlord reportedly attempted to strike him, according to the report. According to police, the landlord positively identified Trinidad and the claimed weapon used in the attack.
According to jail records, Trinidad is facing one count of aggravated violence with a dangerous weapon. He was not listed as an inmate on the Miami-Dade County Jail website as of Monday morning.
The reason for the attack is unknown at this time.
