2 men detained during ongoing protests outside Portland ICE building

Police arrested two people Saturday night as protests continued outside the ICE building in South Portland.

During the demonstration, police received complaints about a man’s beating and injuries near S Bancroft Street and Bond Avenue. The man was rushed to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to officials.

Officers later detained a suspect, a 32-year-old man, who was taken into the Multnomah County Detention Center on fourth-degree assault charges.

Meanwhile, police said the victim, a 33-year-old Beaverton male, was identified as a suspect in another incident. While in the hospital, he was charged with fourth-degree assault, according to officials.

Throughout the evening, scores of demonstrators remained at the ICE facility, including many in costume and an appearance by the Unipiper.

While it remained a bustling scene as night fell, the atmosphere was less tense and more “party-like.”

However, at approximately 10:15 p.m., federal agents used pepper spray on the crowd.

Furthermore, OHSU stated that medical helicopters will not be landing at their facility owing to suspected reports of lasers being directed toward Customs and Border Patrol helicopters dispatched to support ICE operations.

Since the nightly protests began in early June, Portland police have reported 49 arrests in the South Waterfront area.

The FBI reports that they have issued five federal citations in the last 24 hours, totaling 189 arrests and citations since June.
