2 killed, 6 hospitalized in Christmas Day pileup on 5 Freeway in northern L.A. County

Two people died and six others were taken to hospitals following a three-vehicle crash on the 5 Freeway in Lebec on Christmas Day, authorities said.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded shortly after receiving a call at 2:56 p.m., according to Public Information Officer Pauline McGee.

McGee confirmed that two victims were pronounced dead at the scene. Six others were transported to local hospitals, with three treated for minor injuries and three uninjured but taken for observation.

The ages and genders of the victims have not been released.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Poor driving conditions due to a winter storm, which brought several inches of rain to Southern California, may have been a factor.

The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert, closing lanes 1 and 2. Officials warned the lanes would remain closed for an unspecified time while crews investigated the crash and cleared the wreckage.
