2 Children Struck by Vehicle Outside Carmichael School; 1 Hospitalized

Two 10-year-old children were hit by a vehicle outside Deterding Elementary School in Carmichael on Wednesday afternoon, leaving one hospitalized, officials said.

According to Sacramento Metro Fire, the incident occurred shortly before 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of Panama Avenue and Stanley Avenue, just as students were leaving school.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP), which is leading the investigation, said the children were crossing the street outside of a crosswalk when they were struck. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Authorities said impairment was not suspected.

One of the children was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, while the other did not require hospitalization.

In a statement, the San Juan Unified School District said both families had been notified and urged the community to stay alert near schools.

“The safety of our students is our highest priority,” the district said. “San Juan Unified encourages all members of the community to practice safe walking and driving habits near our schools, particularly during busy arrival and dismissal times.”

The CHP investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
