A 12-year-old Texas boy returned home from school to discover that his mother and her partner had moved out, leading to criminal charges against the pair, according to police records.
Police responded last Friday to reports of an abandoned child at an apartment complex in Copperas Cove, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by KWTX and KWKT.
The boy told police his mother, Erica Renee Sanders, and her partner, Keven Dwayne Adams, had moved out while he was at school, leaving the apartment completely empty.
When officers reached Adams by phone, he said Sanders had moved into his home — where her son was not welcome — but denied that the child had been abandoned.
A neighbor told investigators the couple had previously kicked the boy out. Police noted that Adams “complained at length” about him during their call.
Both Sanders and Adams claimed that Sanders’ brother was supposed to pick the boy up after school, but Sanders couldn’t specify when that was arranged. When police contacted the boy’s uncle, he said he knew nothing about any such plan.
More than five hours passed between the time the boy arrived home and when authorities finally located the couple, the affidavit stated.
Police contacted Child Protective Services (CPS), which reported that Sanders and Adams refused to share their new address. Adams also told officers he would not allow the boy into his home even if police had an arrest warrant for Sanders.
The couple was later arrested and charged with abandoning and endangering a child without intent to return. The boy is currently staying with his uncle, authorities confirmed.
It remains unclear whether Sanders or Adams has obtained legal representation.
