One person died early Sunday morning in Menifee after their vehicle struck a light pole and caught fire.
The crash happened around 12:30 a.m. near Lindenberger Road and Scott Road, according to the Menifee Police Department. Officers arrived to find a Mercedes-Benz electric vehicle fully engulfed in flames.
Cal Fire Riverside County firefighters responded and worked to extinguish the fire.
A witness told police the car was heading east on Scott Road when it veered onto the south side of the roadway and hit the light pole. The car immediately burst into flames, and the driver did not escape.
Crews found the victim dead in the driver’s seat once they were able to fully put out the fire. Police said extinguishing the flames took longer than usual because of the vehicle’s battery system.
Investigators are still working to determine what caused the crash.
