Wildcats West Earns TSWA All-State Honors

Monterey Wildcat senior guard Peyton West recently was selected to the All-State team by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association.

West helped engineer the Wildcats to another state tournament bid, before the season was first postponed and then later cancelled by governor Bill Lee and the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association.

The Wildcats finished the season with a 27-7 record overall and an 11-3 record in District Six, Single A. Monterey finished second in district play in the regular season.

The Wildcats went on to capture the region championship with a 72-68 victory over district rival Clay County. West tallied 29 points and added three rebound and three assist against the Bulldogs.

In the Wildcats sub-state, at home, against Fayetteville West took over, with the game in doubt. Monterey trailed 35 to 27 as West scored 10 of his game high 25 points in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats rallied for a 44-41 victory and punched their ticket to the Murphy Center for the state tournament.

West and the other seniors leave Monterey high school as the winningest class in program history. The Wildcats were one of eight Single A teams left in the state tournament when the season was cancelled.

The Wildcats were slatted to play Booker T. Washington in the first round of the state tournament. Other games included Hampton against Loretto, East Robertson against Oneida, and Clay County against Memphis Academy of Health and Sciences.
