Golf: Warriors Team Takes Close Win At Regional Tournament

The White County Boys Golf Team is advancing to the State Tournament after winning the Regional on Tuesday at the Golden Eagle Country Club.

As a team, the Warriors shot 321 to take home the first place trophy and earn a spot in the state tournament.

“I’m just proud of all the hard work these guys have put in over the summer,” Head Coach Michael Cunningham said. “I said at the beginning of the year that we are looking at where we want to be at the end of the year. All of the other tournaments were practice for us to get where we wanted to get.”

Tyson Welch led the way for the team, as he shot a 73 in the winning effort. Jeremiah Gardenhire finished with an 82, while Jarrett Glass shot an 83. Cunningham said earlier in the year that those three would be the main pillars of the team, and today they didn’t disappoint.

“Tyson Welch (had) his best round of the year,” Cunningham said. “We needed every shot of it. I’m super proud of all those guys. Even our young guy, Parker Whited, is getting good experience and he stepped up today.”

And needed every shot they did, as they defeated Cookeville by a single stroke.

It’ll be a short turnaround for the team as well, as they plan on celebrating Tuesday before hitting the course on Wednesday.

“We’ll go to dinner tonight and hang out and have fun,” Cunningham said. “We’ll go back to work probably tomorrow and the next day … we’ve got some things to tidy up, but we’re looking forward to the whole experience.”
