Upperman (2-0) defeated DeKalb County (0-2) by a score of 35-0 in Baxter, Tennessee, on Friday night in a game where they outgained the Tigers 403-146 in total yardage.
Upperman’s Ty Dutchess started off the scoring with a nine-yard touchdown run half way through the first quarter.
Quarterback Donoven McCallister threw his first touchdown pass of the season, when he connected with Daniel Metzgar on a 37-yard strike. McCallister picked up a low snap off the ground, andith a DeKalb defender immediately in his face, he scrambled to the right sideline. DeKalb’s secondary came out of coverage to contain McCallister, thus allowing Metzgar a chance to break open.
McCallister capped off the first half scoring with a 73-yard touchdown run, giving Upperman a 21-0 halftime lead.
Dutchess scored his second touchdown of the night from 28 yards out midway through the third, and senior Zach Stewart finished the scoring off with a nine-yard run up the middle with four minutes to play in the fourth.
Upperman finished the night with 132 yards passing and 271 rushing yards.
DeKalb produced six first downs against Upperman’s defense, which created three takeaways. McCallister, Caden Nash and Carter Shanks all recorded interceptions.
Upperman host Smith County next week in Baxter, and DeKalb County host their first home game of the season in Smithville, Tennessee, against Stone Memorial.
