Saturday, the Upperman Bees baseball team defeated the Covington Chargers two runs to zero to secure the Division I Class 3A State Championship. This championship comes almost thirty years since the Bee’s last baseball state championship in 1993. That ’93 Bees team was under the helm of head coach Wayne Shanks. Now, 29 years later, Wayne’s son Wes Shanks is the next head coach to lead the Bees’ baseball team to the mountain top.
Now, after a Memorial Day weekend to soak it all in, UCSN spoke with Head Coach Wes Shanks about the championship run. Shanks recounts how this year’s team came together over the season, what he and the team had to persevere through, and what it felt like for him and the team to finally win the State Championship.
