Thursday Night Hoops Recap: Upperman, Clay County Win District Titles

Upperman 49, York Institute 34

The Upperman Bees won the District 8AA Championship on Thursday night over York Institute by a final score of 49-34.

Collin Gore was named Tournament MVP, and he scored a game-high 18 points. A.J. Nash added 17 points, and Jace McWilliams added nine points.

Bryson Bilbrey led the Dragons with 14 points. Riley Cooper and Nic Smith scored seven points each.

Clay County 58, Pickett County 46

It took overtime on Thursday, but the Clay County Bulldogs won their third consecutive District Title over Pickett County by a final score of 58-46.

Trailing 46-43, Hunter Wattenbarger nailed a three from the corner to tie the game with less than two seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime. Once there however, the Clay County defense locked down and outscored the Bobcats by a 12-0 tally to bring home the win.

Grant Strong led all scorers with 30 points for the Bulldogs, while Keaton Arms added eight points and 10 rebounds.

Wattenbarger finished with 12 points and nine rebounds, and Zach Amonett added 18 points.

Jackson County 60, Monterey 51

The Jackson County Blue Devils earned third-place in District 6A on Thursday with their 60-51 win over Monterey.

Jordon Arroyo paced Jackson County with 19 points in a balanced scoring effort for the home team, while Ramon Cuevas added 16 points. Eli Burris scored 11 points of his own as well.

Tucker Phillips led the Wildcats with 19 points, and Cayden Jones scored 14 points. LT Sullivan scored 10 points.

Livingston Academy 88, Watertown 70

The Wildcats took down Watertown in the third-place game for District 8AA by a final score of 88-70.

Matthew Sells and Nick Choate were each named to the All-Tournament team, and both played big roles in getting the win for the Wildcats.

Sells scored a game-high 26 points, while Choate scored 14 points. Eli Melton added 16 points, and Isaac Story scored 11 points.
