Thursday Night Hoops Recap: Clay County, York Institute Lock Up Region Titles

York Institute 30, Upperman 28

The Dragons won a low-scoring affair on Thursday to take home the Region 4AA Championship over Upperman.

York got off to a good start on offense, as they led 12-5 at the end of the first quarter. The lead dropped to 19-16 at half, and the Dragons clung to a 25-24 lead at the end of the third. In the fourth, York outscored Upperman 5-4 to close the game.

Jon Heddings led the Dragons with nine points, while Nic Smith scored eight.

Jace McWilliams led all scorers with 10 points for the Bees.

Clay County 63, Pickett County 49

The Bulldogs overcame a fast start from the Bobcats to win the Region 3A Championship by a final score of 63-49.

After both teams struggled in the third with eight points apiece, Clay pulled away in the fourth by outscoring Pickett 25-18.

Class A Mr. Basketball Finalist Grant Strong led the effort with 30 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, while Gunnar Silk added 13 points.

Zach Amonett led Pickett County with 24 points. Caleb Lowhorn grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Bobcats on the glass.
