Thursday Around UC Sports Nation: York Institute Handles Pickett County

It has not been a kind week for the Pickett County High School basketball teams. Fresh off a doubleheader sweep against Clay County in a pair of top-five match-ups on Tuesday night, the Bobcats and Lady Bobcats were each dealt another loss Thursday night at York Institute.

Reese Beaty poured in 24 points to lead the Dragonettes (14-5) to a 73-42 rout of the Lady Bobcats (16-5) in the opener. York Institute is ranked #9 in the State in Class 2A, while Pickett County is ranked #2 in the Class 1A poll. Nic Smith struck for 17 points in the nightcap, while Jon Heddings added 16, as the Dragons (15-6) roared to a 68-56 victory. Zach Amonett and Hunter Wattenbarger tallied 17 apiece for the Bobcats (17-5), who have lost two in a row for the first time this season. Pickett County entered the week as the #1 team in the State in Class 1A.

Elsewhere Thursday night, Silas Randolph scored 29 points to lead the Monterey Wildcats (10-14) past the Clarkrange Buffaloes (2-20), 68-55. Clarkrange, however, claimed the girls’ meeting, 53-40, to improve to 16-6 on the season. The Lady Wildcats drop to 6-16.

White County and Stone Memorial split their District 7-3A games, with the Warriorettes (18-4, 7-1 District) cruising past the Lady Panthers (7-13, 2-6), 73-33. The Panthers (12-8, 6-2) claimed the nightcap, 65-47, over the struggling Warriors (12-8, 4-4). The White County boys have now dropped three straight, all in district play.
