Stone Steel President and Cup Creator Randy Keifer

Stone Steel originally opened its doors in 1978 as a hometown welding and fabrication shop. Known as Stone Brothers Welding, Tony and Harold Stone developed a reputation for quality work and no nonsense dealings.

In The mid 80’s Tony and Harold took a successful partnership and turned it into two successful businesses, with Tony devoting his full attention to the fabrication shop and Harold continued to develop a thriving ready mix business.

Because of this reputation and the loyalty of their clients, Stone Brothers Welding quickly grew from a hometown fix it shop to a respected commercial structural steel construction company.

In the mid ‘90s, Stone Brothers welding experienced another evolution, this one to larger and more complex projects, bringing them to their latest incarnation – Stone Steel LLC.

Stone Steel specializes in complete Division 5 steel packages and excels in the opportunity to follow a project from the anchor bolts to the final ornamental handrail.

Today, Stone Steel President and owner Randy Keifer pursues regional projects, that result most often from the recommendation of a client.

“To me it was about making something that truly looked like a legacy type trophy,” Keifer said. “Hopefully, that is something the UC sports Nation will carry on for quite sometime and it will get passed from school to school to school.”

The actual Stone Steel Cup trophy stands over two feet tall and weighs over 30 pounds. Close to 100 man-hours went into creating the Stone Steel trophy.

“I did that on purpose. I wanted something that was truly a one of a kind trophy,” Keifer said. “Something that these kids can be proud of. The trophy is a mixed metal trophy. It has mild steel, stainless steel, brass, and copper. Us being in the steel business we wanted the trophy to show a little bit of everything. The steel has a custom patina finish.”

The cup honors the Upper Cumberland schools for team achievements, individual excellence, and a commitment to sportsmanship.

“Both of my kids participated in high school athletics,” Keifer said. “My oldest daughter played soccer in the early 2000’s. She was a goal-keeper and went on to play in college. I saw a need. The Stone Steel Cup covers all of the fringe sports. It’s not just the big three. We were searching all the time for standings and articles on kids that were doing different things besides playing football, basketball, baseball, and softball.”

Points will be awarded to each school during the Fall, Winter and Spring sports seasons. The school with the most points will be awarded the Stone Steel Cup.

“We are blessed with a lot of work where we do not have to do a lot of advertising,” Keifer said. “We like to participate in community projects though. We just try and be a good community partner. The partnership with the Stone Steel Cup trophy is a good way for us to give back.”
