Quarantine & Answer: Wildcat Football Scott Hughes

Social Distancing is a phrase that will forever be apart of our vocabulary as we move forward. We are going to do a series of questions and answers with coaches across UC Sports Nation and how they cope with this unique time, not only in America but in the World.

Our next coach in the series is Monterey head ball coach Scott Hughes.

Question:

What does a typical day in quarantine look like for you and your family?

Answer:

We are trying  to keep some structure. I get up and we do school work with our kids. I have a second grader and a fourth grader. Both of them get up early so it’s really easy.

From there I start doing some prep for my online classes. Making sure I have all my lessons planned for that and being able to reach out to students to make sure they have everything they need.

After thatI go ahead and post our football teams workout. I try and have that posted everyday between 9 and 9:30.

After that we kind of shift gears and do a little P.E. time with my kids at home. A little structured workout with them. Wether it’s sports specific or more P.E. type stuff.

After that there is a lot of down time in the afternoon. There is a lot of play time with the kids. That’s the only positive right now that I am finding. Is getting to be at home with my kids because I do lose so much time coaching. I am getting to spend a lot of time at home with them right now.

Question:

What is the best thing you’ve read lately?

Answer:

I have been doing quite a bit of reading. Spent a lot of time with some daily devotionals and reading some scripture and trying to spend more time doing that.

Past that I have spent a lot of time studying football and trying to make our program better. Not only from an X’s and O’s stand point but from a leadership standpoint and a giving back standpoint.

Question:

What’s on the menu at the Hughes household right now?

Answer:

The weather has changed and it’s good. It makes it a whole lot easier on my wife. I’m not very good when in come to cooking in the house. My forte when it comes to cooking is when it gets warm I can get on the grill a little bit. With the weather changing it has made me feel more important when it come to the food spectrum.

We try to eat fairly healthy so we have had a lot of grilled chicken and some steaks. From there making sure we get plenty of vegetables.

Question:

Have you guys watched any good movies lately?

Answer:

When it was raining we went on a four night movie run where we let the kids pick what we watched. My little girl picked The Secret Life of Pets II one night.

My sone went old school basketball and chose the movie Like Mike and we had Space Jam in there one night.

The last one was Frozen II. I’ve had a good run of Disney. With our crazy household we don’t have a lot of time for movies. It’s been good to sit down and enjoy dinner with the family and sit down and watch a movie and do some popcorn or something like that.

Question:

How clutch has the Disney Plus App come into play during this time of isolation?

Answer:

Oh we love the Disney App. My kids are kind of old school though. I hope they get this from me and my wife. My kids are outside kids. When it’s been raining we are trying to find points and time for them to go out and be active and ride bikes and play basketball and do whatever they can outside.

The Disney App has been very good to us though. It’s opened up a whole new umbrella of things that they can watch that you can trust.

Our household tens to have a Disney App or and ESPN or SEC Network type feel. There’s not a lot of in between in our house.

Question:

What are you looking forward to the most when the quarantine is over?

Answer:

I am in a tie on that. I cannon wait to get back to watch my daughter get back to playing basketball and gymnastics and I cannot wait to get back to watching my son play baseball and basketball.

I can’t wait to get back with my team. You know, I am a big relationship guy. I think anyone who has ever played for me would know that. I hope all my guys know that I am there for them at all points in time.

I’m really struggling not being able to see those guys everyday and making sure they have what they need. Even though I can talk to them it’s different seeing them face to face.
