Social Distancing is a phrase that will forever be a part of our vocabulary as we move forward. We are going to do a series of questions and answers with coaches across UC Sports Nation and how they cope with this unique time, not only in America but in the World.

Our next coach in the series is Dustin Key. Key is the head baseball coach at Van Buren County.

Question:

What does your typical day in quarantine look like for you right now?

Answer:

Well we have four kids. Their ages are eight months, one who just turned five and that was very interesting having a five-year-old birthday at home, we have one that’s seven and one that is 13. Balancing school and things like that is quite interesting at my house right now.

Question:

What was that five-year-old birthday party like?

Answer:

We were supposed to have a skating party for her. She woke up and said, “Daddy I’m real excited for my skating party!” I said, “Now Mille you know we can’t go do that with everything going on.” Of course, she understands a little bit of what’s going on.

My wife and all the kids and her great grand parents and we had a birthday party. We had a bounce house my wife got years ago. We took it to her grandma’s house and had a party and opened her gifts and had a blast.

Question:

What’s on the menu at the Key household?

Answer:

My wife’s a really good cook. She’s going about once a week to the store to make a menu for us. We have everything from alfredo to quesadillas. Things like that, that are real simple.

Question:

Have you read anything interesting lately?

Answer:

Really, I’ve only been reading on the internet about the news on the corona virus and trying to keep up with free agency in the NFL. Because I have got to have some kind of sports.

Question:

How have you been able to keep a workout routine?

Answer:

It’s kind of difficult. Because my dad who is the biggest sports buff and workout guru in all the World, he bought a pull up bar for me to put over my door. We were doing that. My wife has a treadmill, we have many exercise balls and weighted balls.

My wife can look up all these things on YouTube. We need to take her YouTube app away after nine o’clock. She gets to involved with it. She can come up with a workout that can kill you.

Question:

What is the first thing you’re looking forward to doing when the quarantine is over?

Answer:

There are so many things. Of course, I’m a school teacher. Waking up everyday and getting to go to school and get in a routine. Get to be around the kids and let the kids go out and get to be around their friends.

Just get back to being a little more normal and not being compacted in the house. It’s not just one thing, I think just getting out and being on a regular routine would be what I wanted to do.

Question:

Are you getting dressed like normal or lounging around in your PJ’s or comfy clothes all day?

Answer:

Usually I get up and take care of our two cats and our dog. Our dog is so big she always needs to be let outside. She come back in and I feed her. I fix myself breakfast. When the girls get up, they always ask for pancakes. They love pancakes with chocolate chips. I cook those for them at least three times a week.

After that get a shower and shave and workout. I always take Wednesday’s off. Wednesday’s are our lazy days.

The rest of the week we try and keep our routine. After I workout and after lunch we try and homeschool. My wife and I are both teachers so its kind of easy for us.

Question:

Have you watched any good movies lately?

Answer:

Yes! They love Frozen II. That is the movie of choice. That and the Disney movie Zombies. The eight-month-old gets a lot of Mickey Mouse Club House.

Question:

I take it the Disney Plus App is used a whole lot in your household?

Answer:

Yes. The Disney Plus App and YouTube are used a whole lot in my house.

Question:

Have you been able to do anything fun with your family over this down time?

Answer:

We have had a lot more family meals. My seven-year-old daughter said we needed to have a movie night. Every Friday we set down and have a movie night. My wife might make a homemade pizza or it’s just something simple that she’s come up with. We sit down, all of us, and watch a movie together.

A tornado hit White County. We lost power for a while. So here comes my seven-year-old again and spread all the board games out. So, we have had board game time.

Question:

What kid of music are you guys working out to?

Answer:

My oldest is the music guru of the house. Anything in Spotify he comes up with. And when I say, anything I mean it. From Led Zeppelin to Kenny Chesney. My little girls love Imagine Dragons, so that’s usually incorporated in there too.

Question:

Are there any interesting TV shows you’ve watched on cable or a streaming device?

Answer:

As far as documentaries I go back to YouTube. My oldest loves to watch history videos. He’s a 13-year-old pretty much in an adult’s body. He loves to watch history documentaries. He loves watching on Russia, or anything that involves the Middle East, World War One and World War Two.
