Pioneers On Three Game Win Streak, With Big Game Friday

As all you parents out there know, life and attitudes with a teenager, can turn on a dime. Coaches at the high school level, in particular, are not immune to the drastic swings of moods and behaviors of their high school athletes.

“If we would have had this conversation after we played Stone Memorial, I would have told you that the wheels were falling off and the house was burning down and we were going to have to take cover,” Warren County boy’s basketball coach Chris Sullens said. “It’s funny how high school kids are. One game can change everything.”

On January 6th, the Pioneers were 10-6 as the district slate approached. A four game losing streak side swiped Warren County, seemingly out of nowhere. Two of those four losses were to district opponents White County, and Stone Memorial. The Pioneers record fell to 10-10 overall and 0-2 in district play.

“I think we have had a basketball team that has looked at the big picture and realized we were not playing that well,” Sullens said. “We understood that maybe we need to play more as a basketball team instead of individuals. As a staff we had to get them better prepared to play. There were a few times where we stepped on the floor and I didn’t thin we had the energy and effort we were going to need to win big basketball games.”

Warren County’s won their last three basketball games and none of the three victories were by less than 15 points. Over that three-game span the Pioneers have averaged 74 points per game, while have only given up 54 points on the defensive end of the floor.

To keep pace in District 6,3A the Pioneers need a win against White County this Friday night in McMinnville. The Warriors have won 10 of their last 11 games and boast an undefeated 4-0 district record.

White County sits alone at the top of the district standings. Stone Memorial trails White County by one game and the Pioneers trail the Warriors by two games.
