Monterey Claims Region Championship Against Bulldogs

Monterey’s boys basketball team claimed the region championship, Thursday night in Livingston, against Clay County by a final score of 72 to 68.

The Wildcats managed to hold the lead after each quarter throughout the night. Monterey’s biggest lead, at the end of any quarter on the night, was at 55 to 50 at the end of the third quarter.

Clay County hit 10 shots from behind the arch compared to eight from the Wildcats. Clay County also hit more free throw than Monterey did as well. The Bulldogs connected on 14 of their 19 tries as Monterey hit 12 of their 18 chances at the charity stripe.

Grant Strong scored a team high 26 points for Clay County. Strong went into the fourth quarter with 24 points. Mason Sharp added 17 points as well for the Bulldogs.

Peyton West scored a game hight 29 points for the Wildcats. West hit five of six free throw attempts on the night to go along with two made three’s. Cayden Jones, Jaxon Billings, and Silas Randolph all scored eight points each.

The victory for the Wildcats means that they will host Fayetteville, Monday night in Monterey, in the Sectional round of the Tennessee Boys Basketball State Tournament. Fayetteville has an overall record of 25-5, and 8-2 in district play.

The loss does not end Clay County’s season. The Bulldogs will travel to Eagleville on Monday night. Eagleville brings an overall record of 27-7 and 9-1 in district play, to the table. Both games are slatted to tip off at 7 P.M. Monday night.
