Monday Around UC Sports Nation: Strong Showing by UC Teams in Tournaments

A total of seven Upper Cumberland teams kicked off post-Christmas tournaments in various locations on Monday, and of those seven, five claimed victory in their opening round games.

Three area teams participated in opening round games of the Innisfree Hotels Tournament in Pensacola Beach, FL. The Pickett County Bobcats raced out to a 13-2 lead over Altha, FL, but had to knock down some key free throws in the game’s final moments to secure a 51-44 victory. Sophomore Heath Wattenbarger led all Bobcat scorers with 16 points. Pickett County (11-3) will play Silliman Institute of Mississippi on Tuesday.

The Clarkrange Lady Buffaloes also claimed a victory in Pensacola, as they edged Breckinridge County, KY, 57-53. Meanwhile, the White County Warriors were handed a 42-27 setback at the hands of Canterbury, FL, on Monday.
