Tuesday Around UC Sports Nation: Cookeville Sweeps at Lebanon; Lady Cavs Clinch District

The Cookeville Lady Cavaliers faced what appeared to be their most daunting challenge of the 2021-22 high school basketball season Tuesday night – a trip to Lebanon. The Lady Cavs entered the game undefeated and ranked #2 in the State in Class 4A, and with the extra target of having beaten the eighth-ranked Lady Blue Devils – who, by the way, are the defending Class AAA State Runners-up – by six points, back on January 14.

Cookeville led by only four points entering the fourth period, but KK Graves sparked a 30-11 outburst in the final period, with 15 points of her own, as the Lady Cavs (24-0, 6-0 District) clinched the Regular Season District 9-4A Championship with a runaway 63-40 victory. Graves finished with 20 total points, while Cassie Gallagher tallied a team-high 22. Games with Mt. Juliet and Wilson Central (and a possible make-up game with White County) are all that stands in the way of Cookeville clinching an undefeated regular season.

Meanwhile, the Cookeville Cavaliers earned what might be considered their best win of the season, with a 56-47 victory against the #8 Blue Devils in the nightcap. Dontae Potts-Heard led the Cavs (13-13, 3-3) with 15 points, as Cookeville rallied from a nine-point first half deficit. Lebanon (20-5, 4-2) won at Cookeville in a shootout, 83-81, back on January 14.

In other area games, the York Institute Dragons outlasted the Clay County Bulldogs, 75-72, despite Grant Strong’s 44 points and nine rebounds for the Bulldogs (13-5). Nic Smith paced the Dragons with 18 points. York Institute (17-6) is ranked #10 this week in the Class 2A poll, and has won seven in a row. Clay County rose to #2 in the latest Class 1A State poll, but had their five-game win streak snapped in the loss.

The York Dragonettes made it a clean sweep in Celina by convincingly winning Tuesday night’s opener, 60-39. Reese Beaty scored 17 and Emy Crabtree added 14 for the Dragonettes (16-5), who are ranked #8 this week in the Class 2A poll. Briley Burchett posted 10 points for the Lady Bulldogs (15-4), who had a six-game winning streak snapped. Like the Bulldogs, the Clay County ladies are ranked #2 this week in Class 1A.

The Warren County Lady Pioneers reached the 20-win plateau for the season with a 48-32 win at Shelbyville. The Lady Pioneers (20-5, 5-2) complete the regular season sweep of Shelbyville (9-10, 0-6). Meanwhile, the Pioneers (9-13, 2-5) took two out of three from Shelbyville (4-14, 1-5)  in the regular season, with a 64-53 road win, Tuesday night.
