Golf: Bee’s Boys Team And Top Girl Advance To State

For the second year in a row the Upperman boys golf team won their region to advance to the state tournament held at Willowbrook Country Club in Manchester on October 8th and 9th.

The Upperman girls team season ended Monday afternoon at the Golden Eagle Country Club in Cookeville. Upperman senior golfer Juliann Johnson did card the second lowest score on the girls side of the tournament. Her 76 qualified her to go to state on the individual level.

“It’s wonderful. I’m just proud for the kids,” head coach Joey Jones said. “I’m disappointed my girls team didn’t make it… Overall it’s a good feeling. I get to go back with all my boys and Juliann.”

The boys shot a combined four man total of 327. The Bees beat the second place team by over 20 strokes. Cason Mayberry led the way for Upperman with a 78. Reece Anderson came in one stroke behind Mayberry with a 79. Will Spillers carded an 82 and Jared Greenwood finished the scoring out with an 88.

“We were consistent,” Jones said. “We stayed right where we needed to stay… We knew going in we needed to be in the 320’s to have a shot at (winning). We need to be lower than that when we get to state.”
