Friday Night Lights: Jackson Co, Cookeville See Seasons End

Blackman 23, Cookeville 21

The Cookeville Cavaliers took a late 21-20 lead, but just couldn’t get off the field on defense and their season ended with a 23-21 defeat at the hands of Blackman. This is the first season the Cavaliers have missed the playoffs since the 2000-01 season.

The Cavaliers took a 14-7 lead heading into halftime after a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown by Donovan Sullivan. This came shortly after a 42-yard touchdown run by Senior Quarterback Stockton Owen.

The Blaze scored two unanswered touchdowns in the second half, but missed the extra point on the second. Cookeville took the lead right back on a Logan Sides Touchdown run, before Blackman kicked a 28-yard field goal to take the lead for good.

Cookeville finishes the season with a 6-4 record and a 3-4 mark in region play.

Trousdale County 34, Jackson County 8

The Jackson County Blue Devils also saw their playoff hopes come to an end on Friday in a 34-8 loss to Trousdale County.

Jackson County started the season with wins in four of their first five games, but the offense struggled in the final five games, only averaging three points a game over that stretch.

With Cascade’s loss to Westmoreland, Jackson County needed a win to make the playoffs.

The Blue Devils close out 2020 with a 5-5 record and 1-4 in region play.

Goodpasture 49, White County 28

The White County Warriors continued their string of solid offensive performances, but it wasn’t enough in a 49-28 loss to Goodpasture.

Since losing starting Quarterback Malaki Dowell to a torn ACL against York, the White County offense has been averaging 34 points a game and they put up points against Goodpasture. They just didn’t get the needed stops to win the game.

Due to their cancellation against Macon County, the Warriors did pick up a bowl game with Green Hill, set for next Saturday at 3:30 P.M.

Macon County 13, Livingston Academy 0

The Livingston Academy offense only mustered 108 total yards of offense in their 13-0 defeat to Macon County on Friday.

The Tigers opened the scoring in the first quarter with a touchdown, and they added another in the third to push the lead to its final margin.

Though they didn’t experience much success on offense, Kaleb Robinson put up 50 yards on 17 carries. Raven Carpenter threw for 48 yards on two completions.

The Wildcats (6-4, 2-2) will go on the road for their playoff game next week against Nolensville after finishing third in the region.

Clay County 38, Red Boiling Springs 22

The Bulldogs closed out their regular season on a high note, as they defeated RBS by a final score of 38-22.

Keaton Arms threw for 89 yards and a touchdown on five completions in the win, but the ground attack is where the damage was done.

Joseph Marcom led the way with 119 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries, while Alec Kerr, Tyler Wathal and Seth Eads each added scores of their own.

The Bulldogs (6-4, 3-2) also finished third in their region, meaning they will go on the road next week for their playoff game when they take on Copper Basin.

Gordonsville 20, Monterey 13

The Wildcats fell just short after a quick start on Friday, as Gordonsville claimed the region championship with a 20-13 win over Monterey.

After scoring the first 13 points of the game, Monterey failed to get into the endzone for the rest of the contest and it proved to be their downfall in a 20-13 defeat.

Monterey (7-2, 4-1) finishes second in the region and will get to host their playoff game next week against Sale Creek.

York Institute 14, Cannon County 13

The Dragons overcame a 13-0 deficit on Friday in their 14-13 win over Cannon County.

Caden Stover got the scoring started with a 73-yard kickoff return early in the third quarter, and Ben Cooper scored the go-ahead touchdown from nine yards out. Zack Gibson converted the two-point conversion for a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

The Dragons had a ton of success on the ground, as they rushed for 220 yards as a team. Gibson led the way with 118 yards on 17 carries, while Cooper put up 62 yards.

York (3-7, 3-2) finishes third in the region, and will hit the road for their playoff game next week when that take on Loudon.

Oakland 36, Warren County 20

The Pioneers battled the top-ranked Patriots for the entire game, but fell just short by a final score of 36-20.

C.J. Taylor continued his stellar season, as he put up 185 rushing yards and a touchdown to keep the Pioneers within a score as late into the game as the fourth quarter.

After how the last two weeks have gone, the Pioneers (8-2, 5-2) have finished third in the region and will have to go on the road for the playoffs against MT. Juliet.

Jo Byrns 42, Pickett County 6

Friendship Christian 35, Stone Memorial 8

Upperman 1, Sequatchie County 0

The Bees earned a week off in the final Friday of the regular season, as Sequatchie County had to forfeit after receiving a positive Covid-19 test within their program.

Upperman (7-3, 5-0) finishes with a perfect region record and will host a playoff game next week against Signal Mountain.

Cumberland County 1, DeKalb County 0 (Covid win)

Despite having to forfeit this game, the TSSAA deemed DeKalb County safe to play after the team was allowed to do Contact Tracing, and the Tigers will host Spring Hill.
