Friday Night Around UC Sports Nation: Cookeville Girls Remain Unbeaten

The Cookeville Lady Cavaliers ran their unblemished record to 9-0 Friday, as they topped CAK, 61-52, in a game played at Knoxville Webb. Cassie Gallagher led four Lady Cavs in double figures with 16 points. Cookeville will look to make it a perfect ’10’ on Saturday, as they battle host Webb. Cookeville beat the Lady Spartans, 48-44, at home back on November 19.

Elsewhere in girls’ action, York Institute capped off a perfect 3-0 week, with a gritty, 55-47 win over Cumberland County. Gabby Beaty scored 20 points to pace the Dragonettes (8-2), while Reese Beaty added 18. Addy Stowers scored 16 points to lead Clarkrange (9-1) past Gordonsville, 49-33, in the lone district game of the night.

On the boys’ side, Nic Smith scored 18 points, and Jon Heddings added 16, as York Institute (8-1) edged Cumberland County, 68-65. Upperman’s A.J. Nash nailed nine three-pointers – one short of the school record – and tallied 36 points in the Bees’ 70-67 win over Taylor County, FL, in the SAMCO Classic at Trenton, FL. A.J. Brandon scored 22 points, but Clarkrange fell short against Gordonsville, 78-59.

Van Buren County at White County, and Friendship Christian at Clay County, were both canceled due to non-Covid related illness.
