Bees Defeat Cavaliers For Second Straight Year

It’s officially a rivalry. For the second straight year, the Upperman Bees opened their season with a scintillating 21-20 win over the Cookeville Cavaliers.

Senior Donoven McCallister shined under the bright lights, as he got the scoring started with a 43-yard pick-six that gave Upperman a 7-0 lead. After Cookeville scored to take a 12-7 lead in the third quarter, senior running back Zach Stewart scored from seven yards out to give the Bees a 14-12 lead.

McCalister took matters into his own hands again with less than three minutes to go in regulation. Facing a 20-14 deficit, McCallister took the ball to the house from 22 yards out for the go-ahead score.

Next, it was the Bees’ turn to hold serve and try to preserve a win. With the game on the line and a yard standing between the Cavaliers and the endzone, the Bees blitzed through the offensive line and stopped Cookeville quarterback Stockton Owen a yard short to seal the victory.

McCallister ran the ball 18 times for 130 yards overall, including the 22-yard, game-winning score.

Owen paced the Cavaliers with 159 yards on 21 rushes. Owen had a highlight reel run of his own in the third quarter, when he took the ball 55 yards to the house for a Cookeville lead.
