Coach Jimmy Maynord Previews Blackman, Reflects on Tough Season for Cavaliers

The 2021 football season has not played out at all as expected for the Cookeville Cavaliers. Neither the coaches, the players, the fans nor even high school football analysts could have predicted the Cavs would enter the next-to-last week of the regular season with only one victory and be completely out of the playoff race in Region 3-6A. Such is life in sports sometimes… you take the good, but sometimes, you also have to take the bad.

Cookeville’s lone win in 2021 came back in Week 2, with a 42-0 shutout of Livingston Academy. At that point, the Cavaliers were 1-1, having lost to Upperman in the season opener, with Lebanon scheduled to visit in Week 3. Even after the Blue Devils claimed a one-score win in that Week 3 clash, no one still would have predicted that loss to be the first of six straight for Coach Jimmy Maynord’s team.

This Friday night, the Cavaliers host Blackman (3-5) in their final home game of the season. Coach Maynord spoke with UC Sports Nation about the high-powered Blaze offense he expects to see Friday, and reflects on the 2021 season to date.
