Cavaliers’ Golf Sweeps District Tournament

The Cookeville Cavalier golf teams showed up in a major way on Monday, as both the boys and girls teams won the District Tournament at Golden Eagle Golf Club.

Luke Caldwell led the way, as he sat atop the overall leaderboard with a 69. Caldwell was also named the District Boys Player of the Year, and Head Coach Larry Pitts was confident that Caldwell would be an easy choice.

“Nobody outworks him,” Pitts said. “He thinks his way around a golf course better than most … He was unanimously voted, and there was really no question. There are some other really good players in the district, but day in and day out, Luke Caldwell is the man.”

Caldwell said that the confidence Pitts has in him helps raise his confidence level.

“It means a lot that he believes in us,” Caldwell said. “He’s with us all the time, so it feels good to know he never had a doubt.”

Other finishers for the boys included Joseph Agee’s 74, good enough for a fifth overall finish. Jakob Smith and Seth Clayton tied for third on the squad with a 77, while Ethan Vanstratum added a 78 that would be thrown out.

The girls were just as impressive, as they placed three golfers inside the top 5 individuals. Savannah Pearson led the way with an 81 and finished in second place overall. As a senior and a member of the first girls team that Pitts has taken to the District Tournament, Pearson said she’s really proud of the performance for the team.

“I’m feeling really good (about the team),” Pearson said. “It’s the best score I have had all year … I don’t really know how to describe it, I just feel really good.”

Pearson said that although it’s a very positive feeling around the team at the moment, they know they have more ahead of them and will get back to work after a short celebration.

“We’re probably going to (get back to work) tomorrow,” Pearson said. “Probably.”

Pitts echoed this mindset, saying his team will have the off-day on Tuesday before getting back to the course on Wednesday.

“We’ll let them recoup a little bit…Wednesday afternoon, we’ll be right back at it,” Pitts said. “After Wednesday and Thursday, I like to let them prepare on their own … whatever their normal routine is, I let them work it.”
