Bulldogs Lose Slug Fest To Monterey In Overtime

It took a late fourth quarter comeback for the Monterey Wildcats (9-0) to remain undefeated on the season and win the Region 4 Single A crown.

Monterey found a way to beat the Clay County (6-3) Bulldogs 9-6 in overtime.

Yards were hard to come by for both offenses. Some of it was due to the rain but most of it can be attributed to how well both defenses played throughout the game.

The Clay County defense held Monterey out of the end zone on three trips inside the 10 yard-line.

Clay County took a 6-0 lead early in the second quarter with a touchdown run from Alec Kerr.

Monterey’s offense dialed up a play action pop pass their tight end Carter Charlton, to tie the game up, with just under five minutes to play in the fourth quarter.

Senior quarterback and place holder Jordan Key had trouble with the snap and rolled out to his right. Key dove for the pylon but was forced out of bounds by several Bulldog defenders.

Their effort to keep Key out of the end zone kept the game tied at six.

Neither offense could move into scoring position in the remainder of the fourth quarter, which sent the game into overtime.

Clay County senior quarterback Jake Ashlock threw an interception on third and goal on their first overtime possession.

The Wildcats worked the ball down to the five-yard line for a field goal attempt. This time Key handled the snap, got the hold down and kicker Rene Telon put it through the uprights.

Clay County accumulated 103 yards of total offense. Monterey finished the night with 214 yards on the night.

Key finished the night 4/7 for 42 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

Clay County’s Carson Sharp and Bryson Burchett both picked off Key throughout the contest.

Running back Mason Bowman racked up 93 yards on the ground off of 12 carries. Fellow running back Antony Soberanis rushed 12 times for 53 yards.

Ashlock completed 3/12 passes for 25 yards and one interception. He also rushed six times for 20 yards.

Kerr tallied 40 yards on 10 carries and Will Ogletree added 25 yards on 10 carries also.

Monterey travels to Gordnsville next week for a shot at a perfect 10-0 regular season. Clay County finishes out the regular season with a home contest against Red Boiling Springs.
