Roy Whited announced on Wednesday that he will be stepping down as the York Institute Boys Basketball Head Coach, effective immediately.

The move comes after the Dragons went 20-12 overall with an 11-3 district mark in 2020-21. Whited also led the team to its second consecutive Region Championship.

Whited says his decision was a tough one, but it came down to spending more time with his family and running his business more efficiently.

“My youngest son is going to be a senior at White County next year,” Whited said. “He is a great golfer and I missed most of his matches. My Auction and Real Estate business is in Sparta, and I’m also the Minister at DeRossett Church of Christ, so I do not believe I have been able to do the job that was needed in to be done in difficult times.”

Whited leaves the position in a good place, as the Dragons will return four of their starters when they begin play in a new district.

“Next year with the new classification and our young talent, I feel good about the program being on a solid foundation,” Whited said.

The school will begin their search for their next head coach immediately.
