Police say a married couple in their 60s was shot and killed inside their Simi Valley home on Sunday afternoon. Authorities are now investigating their stepson as a possible suspect.
Officers were dispatched to the Wood Ranch neighborhood just after 12 p.m. after reports of shots fired at a home in the 500 block of Hawks Bill Place, according to a news release from the Simi Valley Police Department.
When officers arrived, they found two people suffering from gunshot wounds. Both victims, who have not yet been publicly identified, were taken to the hospital in critical condition and were pronounced dead around 7 p.m.
Investigators told CBS Los Angeles that they do not believe the incident was random and that it does not appear to be a domestic dispute. Callers reported that the suspect walked up the driveway and into the garage before opening fire.
Police later said they are looking into the victims’ stepson as a possible suspect and are investigating a car fire and suicide that occurred more than 70 miles away at Ayala Park in Chino, which may be connected to the incident.
Chino Police Department officers told CBS Los Angeles they responded to a death by suicide at the park, located at 14225 Central Avenue, after learning a car had been set on fire next to a deceased person. They said they are coordinating with SVPD to determine whether the incidents are linked.
SkyCal flew over the Simi Valley shooting scene, where a large amount of blood was visible inside the garage at the end of a cul-de-sac. Law enforcement maintained a significant presence during the investigation. SkyCal also flew over Ayala Park, showing a burnt-out sedan surrounded by investigators before it was towed.
Authorities asked people to stay away from both areas as investigations continued. SVPD and CPD officers said they do not believe there are any further threats to the public.
