Tennessee Winter Alert: Nashville Homeowners Urged to Prepare Before the Black Friday Freeze

As Tennessee approaches Black Friday weekend, state weather experts are advising Nashville-area residents to finish winter preparations before another wave of frigid evening temperatures hits Middle Tennessee.

The National Weather Service (NWS) predicts stronger temperature swings in Tennessee due to La Niña conditions. Nashville, Clarksville, and Murfreesboro may experience overnight lows in the upper 20s late Friday into early Saturday. These quick fluctuations can raise the risk of burst pipes, roof ice, and heating system strain, especially in older homes in Davidson County.

Home maintenance specialists advise residents to prioritize crucial winterization work this week. This includes insulating exposed pipes in basements, crawl spaces, and exterior walls, which are the places most likely to freeze during early-season temperature decreases. Clearing gutters and downspouts is also vital for preventing ice dams because meltwater freezes overnight.

Before the cooler December weather arrives, energy experts recommend sealing drafty windows and doors, checking attic insulation, and monitoring heating systems. Nashville fire officials also advise households to check smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, adding that heating-related accidents generally rise in the region following Thanksgiving.

Residents are encouraged by emergency managers to check on elderly neighbors who may require assistance in preparing their houses before cooler overnight temperatures persist into the weekend.
