Sacramento Domestic Violence Suspect Dies by Suicide After Firing at Deputy, Ending Hours-Long Standoff

A domestic violence suspect in Sacramento died by suicide early Monday after shooting at a sheriff’s deputy and triggering an hours-long standoff, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident began around 12:40 a.m. near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and 47th Avenue, when a third party called 911 to report a domestic violence situation inside a vehicle. Deputies arrived and the suspect jumped out, firing at least one shot at a deputy. The deputy was not hit and did not return fire.

Deputies later found the suspect barricaded inside a mobile home park nearby. The Sheriff’s Office said the armed man repeatedly threatened deputies and ignored commands from crisis negotiators.

After several hours of failed negotiation attempts, the suspect shot himself. Deputies did not fire any shots during the standoff, and the suspect did not fire at deputies again after the initial encounter.

The Sacramento Bee reported that deputies used flash bangs and less-lethal rounds shortly before the man took his life.

Authorities have not released the suspect’s name, pending notification of next of kin.
